New air purification system for the ISS will protect 100% from viruses

Russia will develop a unique air purification system for the ISS: it even kills COVID-19.

Nikolay Kolesov, General Director of the Concern “Radioelectronic Technologies” (KRET), which is part of the state corporation “Rostec”, spoke about the development of a new air purification system.

Earlier, KRET created the Tiokraft air purification system, which completely decomposes viruses: it combines mechanical filtration of organic pollutants with their subsequent complete decomposition under the influence of soft ultraviolet radiation.

In the process of oxidation of organic impurities, bacteria and viruses are completely destroyed, hazardous phenols, formaldehydes and other harmful substances are removed. It is also noted that “Thiocraft” is coping with the new coronavirus infection.

Now they want to apply this technology to the ISS.

Currently, work is underway to create an air purification system based on the Tiokraft technology for the ISS. The device according to the terms of reference of Roskosmos will be ready by the fall. We plan to send the device into orbit next year.
