Earlier, US President Trump supported the Israeli annexation in his Middle East peace plan.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed confidence that Israel will be able to annex parts of the West Bank within a few months with the support of the Trump administration.
“We will be able to celebrate another historic moment in the history of Zionism,” Netanyahu told a group of European Evangelical Christians who strongly support Israel. The Prime Minister spoke to them via video link.
Israel plans to declare its sovereignty over the strategically important Jordan valley and all Jewish settlements in the West Bank. Israel occupied the West Bank after its capture in the 1967 six-day war.
US President Donald Trump supported the Israeli annexation when he revealed details of his middle East plan in January, approving the creation of a “buffer zone” against terrorists, as Netanyahu calls it.
About 500,000 Jews live in settlements in the West Bank. Among them are many Americans who have settled in what they consider their rightful biblical home.
There was no reaction from the Palestinians to Netanyahu’s Sunday address, but they had previously declared Trump’s peace plan dead.
The Palestinians want to make the West Bank an independent state with East Jerusalem as its capital. Trump’s peace plan provides for the creation of a Palestinian state but sets numerous conditions for it.
UN and EU officials warn Israel against annexing the West Bank, calling it illegal. In their opinion, it will lead to an explosive situation in the entire Middle East.
