Researchers from NASA will send more than 100 squid cubs and 5,000 microscopic animals to the ISS. These creatures, along with other experimental equipment, will travel to the ISS on SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket.
The experiments are supposed to help scientists understand the consequences of space travel. Cubs of squid will be used as part of research on the effects of space travel on beneficial interactions between microbes and animals. It is important that the immune system of squid is similar to that of a human.
NASA notes that the experiment will help develop protective measures to preserve the health of astronauts during long space flights.
“Animals, including humans, rely on microbes to maintain a healthy digestive and immune system. We don’t fully understand how space flight changes these beneficial interactions, ”said Jamie Foster, principal investigator of the experiment.
She added that the squid will be able to solve “important questions in the field of animal health.” Before returning to Earth, the squid will be frozen.
