Named the date of negotiations between the US and Mexico on the issue of duties

Michael Pompeo will head the American delegation.

Representatives of Mexico and the United States will discuss the situation around the introduction of duties on goods from Latin American countries on Wednesday, June 5. The head of the Mexican foreign Ministry Marcelo Ebrard, who earlier in the day went to Washington for talks, announced this on his Twitter.

“I inform you that the high-level meeting aimed at resolving the contradictions between the United States and our country will be held on next Wednesday in Washington,” Ebrard wrote. “Secretary of state Michael Pompeo heads the US delegation, and the Mexican delegation is yours truly.” The Minister added, “there is a readiness for dialogue”. “We will be firm and defend the dignity of Mexico,” said Ebrard.

On Thursday, US President Donald Trump announced the introduction of duties of 5% on goods from Mexico in connection with the migration crisis on the common border. On Friday, he said that such a step would prevent not only illegal migration but also the smuggling of drugs from the Latin American country. Ebrard said on the same day that his country was not responsible “for the flow of migrants from Central America and other countries”, as well as for the increase in drug use in the United States.

According to the Interior Ministry of Mexico, this year the country faced a significant increase in the number of migrants seeking to enter the United States from Central America, the Caribbean, and other regions. According to the Agency, we are talking about 300 thousand people only in the first quarter.
