Until a certain point, it was believed that it was impossible to crack the iPhone. Those who thought so were not even particularly embarrassed by the fact that almost any version of iOS made it possible to jailbreak, which was essentially the same hack. Still, they justified themselves, so you can only crack an unlocked iPhone, but if the device is locked, then nothing will come of this venture. In fact, it was. But the watershed passed in 2015 when the FBI managed to negotiate with the Israeli company Cellebrite, which successfully hacked the terrorist’s iPhone from San Bernardino and confirmed that Apple smartphones were hacked regardless of the generation and version of the OS. But since then, the industry has developed greatly.
Despite the fact that today several companies are professionally engaged in iPhone hacks, each of which operates according to its own method, their equipment for hacking plus or minus is similar to each other. At Cellebrite, this is a combined computer monitor with a system unit, but instead of the usual operating system, it works on the basis of its own platform. GrayShift, another hacking company, has a small gadget in a case similar to an Apple TV, to which a cracked iPhone is connected and passwords are selected.
How to hack an iPhone
But all this is stationary devices, which, as a rule, are located in the offices of policemen and criminologists who crack the iPhone of criminals. In general, this is logical. After all, you will not take the device for hacking with you for a special operation. Firstly, it is inconvenient, and secondly, it’s completely useless. In the end, situations, when it becomes necessary to remove data from a smartphone urgently, do not arise so often. However, now GrayShift decided that law enforcement would need this opportunity and offered them a mobile hacking tool.
Information about the purpose and functional device of the mobile version of the hacking tool is not so much. At the moment, it is only known that it costs more than a stationary one. If you bought a license for the classic version of GrayKey it cost 15, and then 18 thousand dollars (the price was increased due to an increase in the number of calls from law enforcement agencies), then for the portable one – already 45 thousand. That is how much, at least, the US Drug Enforcement Administration paid for this license.
iPhone Hacking Equipment
Obviously, the mobile version is designed to work in the field. It allows you to perform an emergency data extraction from the smartphone of a criminal, victim, or suspect if there is no opportunity to get to the office. So, it should be something like a smartphone or tablet with its own battery so that the hacking device can work autonomously, regardless of the connection to the power supply network. Indeed, otherwise, there will be little use for its portability. Namely, this is what law enforcement officers expect, buying such gadgets and distributing them among their employees.
Here’s what a mobile hacking device of the Israeli company Cellebrite looks like, which realized that the portable version would be popular among special services, formerly GrayShift.
This is the second generation, which is called UFED Touch 2. That is, in front of it was at least one more.
As you can see, it was somewhat reminiscent of a car radio that was extracted from a torpedo. He also has a touch screen, but not glass (capacitive), but plastic (resistive), which you need to control with a stylus, which is not so convenient.
In fact, there is nothing strange in the fact that law enforcement agencies needed portable devices for hacking, no. Still, the situations are different and the iPhone that needs to be hacked may come into contact with liquids or high temperatures, because of which its hardware filling may fail. And until this happens, you need to have time to seize valuable information that can help in the investigation. Another thing is strange here – namely, that Apple can not do anything in order to exclude cases of hacking in principle. After all, until the company fixes the vulnerabilities exploited by hackers, it will obviously be impossible to consider the iPhone a truly secure smartphone.
