Sanctions are imposed on 18 major Iranian banks that help Tehran finance terrorism and develop nuclear weapons.
The United States announced sanctions against 18 major Iranian banks. This is stated in a statement by Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, published by the State Department.
The purpose of the new sanctions is to deprive Tehran of funds to support terrorist organizations and develop nuclear weapons. “Our campaign of maximum economic pressure will continue until Iran enters into comprehensive negotiations aimed at countering the regime’s malicious behavior,” Mike Pompeo said.
The Secretary of State recalled that in 2018 and 2019, Ayatollah Khamenei transferred $ 4 billion from the National development fund of Iran to military spending. While the Iranian Ministry of health requested resources to protect the Iranian people from the coronavirus outbreak, “Khamenei instead increased funding for the Islamic revolutionary guard corps, recognized (in the US) as a foreign terrorist organization, and doubled funding for the Basij group, which terrorizes the Iranian people every single day.”
US sanctions “target the regime and its corrupt officials who have used the wealth of the Iranian people to fuel radical… groups that bring untold suffering to the Middle East and beyond. The United States continues to support the Iranian people, who suffer the most from the regime’s predatory behavior,” said Mike Pompeo.
