The Federal Chancellor of Germany Angela Merkel stated her readiness to support the request of the UK to postpone “Brexit”, but on certain conditions. She told about it, speaking in the Bundestag on Thursday, March 21, on the eve of the summit of the European Union. “This wish, in principle, we can satisfy if next week the British Parliament will support the agreement on withdrawal from the European Union».
At the same time, the Federal Chancellor did not rule out that it may be necessary to hold another EU summit if the next attempt of British Prime Minister Theresa May hold an agreement between London and Brussels through the British Parliament ends in vain. Angela Merkel has once again confirmed that Germany is interested in an orderly withdrawal of the UK from the EU, but is preparing for a tough “Brexit”.
The heads of state and government of the 27 EU countries on March 21 will discuss in Brussels the request of the UK to grant a postponement of “Brexit”. Theresa May would like to move the deadline for the country’s withdrawal from the EU from March 29 to June 30. This idea has not yet found broad support. Thus, the main candidate of the European people’s party (EPP) in the elections to the European Parliament German politician Manfred Weber strongly opposed the extension until the end of June. According to the politician, which he expressed in an interview with the media company Deutschlandfunk, it can lead to political chaos in Europe in the light of the elections to the European Parliament, scheduled for the end of May 2019.
