The British Prime Minister Theresa May appealed for support to the leader of the Labour party Jeremy Corbin, promising him to “fight for Britain” in Brussels. In Belgium, the politician plans to go to resume negotiations on the deal and insist on changes to the agreement on the terms of “Brexit”. This British Prime Minister wrote in her article for the newspaper Telegraph.
In the article, she pointed out that, despite the fact that the labour leader last week refused to support her in the House of Commons, he as well as she believes that the controversial issue of the border between the Republic of Ireland (EU member) and Northern Ireland (which should leave the European Union in the UK after “Brexit”) “must be resolved with Brussels.”
The so-called Irish “backstop” should prevent the emergence of a physical border between Northern Ireland and Ireland. However, he suggests to make the first part of the Customs Union of the EU and the European single market after the onset of the transition period Brexit. Such a regime will operate until London and Brussels find a solution that ensures transparency of the border on the island.
In her article, May assumes that she will look for either “alternative” “backstop”, or the restriction mechanism of this mode at the time. In Brussels, the British Prime Minister promised to return with “new ideas and new determination.”
The House of Commons the politician, meanwhile, called for unity, saying, ” If we stand together and speak with one voice, I believe we can find the right path and move forward.”
May, as the Telegraph points out, insists that she is “set” to start the “Brexit” procedure” on time — on March 29, despite public and private requests from parliamentarians and Ministers to delay the process.
The British Parliament on January 29 adopted two amendments to the bill on the UK’s withdrawal from the European Union. Parliamentarians, in particular, demanded the government to avoid “Brexit” without a deal, and decided to remove from the text of the draft agreement with the European Union mention of “backstop”. It is assumed that instead of it in the final text of the agreement will be mentioned some “alternative agreement”, which does not allow a rigid border with Ireland. In the European Union, however, said that in the agreement they will not change anything, noting that Brussels considers it wrong to revise the agreement, which was concluded in December.
“Brexit” is scheduled on March 29. After that, according to the May’s plan (its British Parliament also rejected on January 15), in the UK until December 31, 2020 will have to operate a transition period. At the same time, the Kingdom will remain a part of the EU Customs Union and the single European market.
