Maduro requested help from WHO in the fight against coronavirus

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro in a telephone conversation asked the head of WHO Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus for assistance in the face of the threat of coronavirus.

“We need support in two main areas. The first is top -level technical, scientific, and medical advice for evaluating and monitoring plan implementation, as well as recommendations for additional measures. Secondly, we need support in accessing diagnostic tools,” Maduro said, a video of the conversation published on Twitter by the presidential press service.
The politician stressed that US sanctions hinder the free access of the Venezuelan authorities to the purchase of necessary medicines.

The day before, the President of Venezuela sent a letter to the IMF leadership requesting that the Bolivarian Republic be allocated $ 5 billion to fight the coronavirus.

The Associated Press, citing a representative of the Fund, notes that the IMF will not be able to consider this request because a number of countries does not recognize the Maduro government. The Venezuelan authorities later reported that they had not yet received an official response to the request for financial assistance.
