Maduro faces life in prison in the United States on the charges

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and a number of his subordinates face life in prison on charges brought by the US Justice Department of involvement in drug trafficking, according to a statement on the Department’s website.

He is charged with four counts: participation in a drug-terrorism conspiracy, conspiracy to import drugs into the United States, use and possession of machine guns and destructive devices as part of the said conspiracy, as well as conspiracy to use such weapons.

This refers to the supply of drugs to the United States by the Colombian group “Revolutionary armed forces of Colombia” (FARC).
Each of these counts carries a prison sentence of up to life.
