Macy’s Department store chain fires most employees due to coronavirus

The company previously closed all its stores in the United States.

Department store chain Macy’s is laying off most of its 125,000 employees because of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, which has hit sales and forced it to close stores.

The company said the pandemic had put a “heavy burden” on its business.

Macy’s, which also owns the Bloomingdale’s and Bluemercury chains, closed all 775 of its stores in the US earlier this month.

This was done to slow the spread of the virus in crowded areas, as well as because of laws passed in some States that require businesses that do not provide essential services, including retail, to close.
