Kanye West sneakers sold at auction for a record amount

Nike Air Yeezy 1 model was purchased for $1.8 million.

Rapper Kanye West’s sneakers sold at auction for a record $1.8 million. This was reported on Monday on Twitter by the American auction house Sotheby’s.

This is a pair of sneakers designed by West in 2008 in collaboration with Nike. They were called the Nike Air Yeezy 1, and their creation was the beginning of the Yeezy brand founded by West, which is still highly valued among collectors. Since 2015, Adidas produce sneakers under the brand name Yeezy.

The black-and-beige-soled pair sold at auction, designed by West in collaboration with Nike designers Mark Smith and Tiffany Beers, was released in a single copy exclusively for the artist himself and was not later reissued. The rapper first appeared in them in public during a performance at the Grammy Awards in 2008. Later, this copy was sold at a charity auction in support of one of the hospitals in Oregon and until recently was kept in a private collection.

At a private auction in Hong Kong, held from April 21 to 26, Rares bought this pair for $1.8 million, a company that buys and resells rare and collectible shoes. In June of this year, the company intends to offer everyone to buy a “share” in a pair of sneakers, which, as expected, will only grow in price over time.

The Nike Air Yeezy 1 set two records at once – as the first sneakers sold for more than $1 million and as the most expensive pair of sneakers in history. The previous record was set in May 2020, when at Sotheby’s in New York for $560 thousand were sold Nike Air Jordan 1 in the most popular among collectors red-black-and-white color “Chicago.” They were worn to a game in 1985 by Chicago Bulls basketball legend Michael Jordan. Previously, the record was held by the Moon Shoe running shoes sold for $437.5 thousand, released by Nike in 1972.
