Japan explained the reason to refuse 2021 Olympics

Kantaro Iwata, an epidemiologist and former scientific adviser to the Japanese authorities, explained the need to refuse to host the Tokyo Olympics in 2021.

According to the expert, the organization of the Olympics requires the fulfillment of an important condition: the epidemiological situation should improve not only in Japan but throughout the world. Iwata noticed that he was pessimistic about the second demand.

“A lot of people from different countries take part in the Olympics, which is not very consistent with the conditions in which we are now and, most likely, we will continue to be in the next year,” the doctor said. He added that the most likely scenario is the holding of the next Games in 2024 in Paris.

The fact that the summer Olympics-2020 was postponed until 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic, became known on March 24. Later, the International Olympic Committee spoke about the special conditions for holding competitions in Tokyo.

On May 25, Japan responded to information that a decision should be made in October 2020 on the possible cancellation of the Tokyo Olympics. According to the Minister for Economic Recovery Yasutoshi Nishimura, the organizing committee does not talk about the timing of the fate of the Games.
