Iran is ready to exchange prisoners with the United States

Iran is ready to exchange prisoners with the United States, Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said, speaking at the discussion platform “Committee on foreign relations.”

“We are ready for a universal exchange (of prisoners with the United States). We are talking about the citizens of Iran. American jails contain citizens who ended up there only because they refused to betray their country. So I repeat: we can exchange all the prisoners,” Zarif said when asked if Tehran is ready to release American prisoners.

In early June, Iranian authorities released US Navy veteran Michael White, who was convicted of insulting the country’s Supreme Leader. The US authorities released Dr. Majid Taheri, who was accused of violating anti-Iranian sanctions and spent 16 months in an American prison.

In late December, Iran released an American student, Wang Xiyue, who was accused of espionage. The US dropped charges against Iranian biologist Masoud Suleimani, who was also charged with violating US sanctions against Iran.

The US has repeatedly called on Iran to release American citizens in detention. Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said that Tehran is ready to exchange prisoners with Washington, indicating that “the ball is on the American side.”
