Tehran will take measures that will make the US regret intercepting an Iranian passenger plane last week, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Abbas Mousavi said.
According to him, the actions of American aircraft in the airspace of Syria and Lebanon concerning the Mahan Air airliner were dangerous; he called them “terrorists” and violating international norms.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, with the support of the General staff of the armed forces, the judiciary and the civil aviation Organization, will take the necessary measures that will make the Americans regret what they did,” Mousavi was quoted as saying by the Fars news agency.
Earlier, the civil aviation Organization of Iran reported that Iran officially protested to the Council of ICAO, demanding an immediate study of the situation around the convergence of American fighter jets with an Iranian passenger plane of Mahan Air, flying from Tehran to Beirut. The passenger plane landed in Beirut (Lebanon), disembarked the passengers, refueled, and then returned to Tehran.
The incident occurred on Thursday, as a result, according to reports, several passengers and crew members were injured, as the pilot made a maneuver to, as noted in Iran, avoid the collision.
The US, in turn, reported that the US air force F-15 plane escorted the Iranian airliner from a distance of one kilometer, taking into account international norms. After identifying the airliner as a Mahan Air passenger plane, the American fighter jet moved away to a safe distance.
