iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro tested for walnut and drop durability

One of the features of the new iPhone 12 series smartphones is the improved protective glass using Ceramic Shield, developed by Gorilla Glass. Apple said it is 4x more drop resistant. Is this so – the authors of the YouTube channel EverythingApplePro checked.

To experiment, they took the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro and just threw them on the concrete floor from different heights. Both smartphones withstood drops from the height of the waist (that is, from the pocket of their trousers) and human growth with dignity: only scratches appeared on the metal frame and several damaged pixels on the iPhone 12 Pro screen.

The fall from a height of 3 meters was decisive. The iPhone 12’s camera stopped working, and when the back cover was thrown down, the glass of both models cracked. As it turned out, the front glass of the gadgets is stronger than the back.

In another video, smartphones were tested with a special device that pressed on the screen, gradually increasing the force. The ceramic safety glass withstood an applied force of 442 Newtons before cracking. For comparison, last year’s iPhone 11 withstood 352 Newtons.

And the reviewers humorously came up with a more interesting test – using an iPhone as a nutcracker. The iPhone 12 handled a few walnuts without damaging the glass, but a green line appeared on the display.

So the Ceramic Shield glass is really very durable, and it’s a definite plus for the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro.
