In the United States, the former Defense Minister of Mexico arrested

Salvador Cienfuegos is accused of drug trafficking and other serious crimes.

Former Mexican defense Minister Salvador Cienfuegos has been arrested at Los Angeles airport. After brief court hearings, the judge decided that 72-year-old Cienfuegos will remain in custody until next week when a formal hearing will be held in his case.

The US authorities suspect the former Minister of using his power to assist in the Beltran Leyva drug cartel’s criminal operations, including managing operations against hostile gangs and financing the transport of drugs by sea.

Cienfuegos, who was called the “Godfather,” served as a Minister in the government of Mexico’s ex-President Enrique Pena Nieto (2012-2018).
