In Hong Kong, a strain of coronavirus of unknown origin was discovered

In Hong Kong, authorities sent residents of a 52-story building to a three-week quarantine after one of them was found to have a new strain of coronavirus. The South China Morning Post reports this.

The virus was found in a 39-year-old housekeeper originally from the Philippines, who has not left Hong Kong since 2019. Before sending the residents of the house to quarantine, they all had tests taken from them.

This is the first case of detection in Hong Kong of a new strain of coronavirus that has undergone a mutation, the origin of which is unknown. The 10-month-old daughter of the man who hired the housekeeper was also infected.

The source of the infection of the woman has not yet been found. Her tests revealed N501Y and E484K mutations, which are also present in the South African and Brazilian strains. More research is needed to pinpoint the option.

Hong Kong authorities have ordered all foreign-born employees to be tested by May 9, Bloomberg reports. An exception will be made for those who received a second dose of the vaccine no later than 14 days before.

The authorities also identified places where the housekeeper had been during the incubation period. All those who were there on the same days were required to pass tests.

Before that, new strains of coronavirus in Hong Kong were found only in people who recently traveled outside the region. It was about the British and South African versions.

11,770 people were infected during the pandemic in Hong Kong; 209 of them died.

New mutated coronavirus strains are highly contagious, although they do not cause a more severe course of the disease. India is now suffering from one of these variants, where hundreds of thousands of new cases of infection are detected every day. On April 29, China’s chief health officer said that the Indian strain was found in.
