A strong forest fire west of Athens is not extinguished for the third day; the Greek fire Service reports multiple gorenje foci.
The fire started on the evening of May 19 near the settlement of Schinos near the town of Loutraki, in Corinthia. The reason was the burning of branches in an olive grove in dry and windy weather. During the day, about 2 thousand hectares of forest were burned.
According to the National Observatory of Athens on the evening of May 21, 5,5 thousand hectares of forest were burned. The smoke from the fire reached Athens. Hundreds of residents were evacuated.
Now the fire is extinguished by almost 300 firefighters and aviation.
“The fire, which started in the evening hours on Wednesday, continues with many scattered (hotspots)of active gorenje. In total, there are 278 firefighters, 89 vehicles, 10-foot groups, a special mechanized part of fire operations, a mobile operational center “Olymp,” eight aircraft (Canadair), eight PZL aircraft, two helicopters, and two more helicopters coordinate the actions,” the fire service said on Saturday morning.
Two Hellenic army helicopters, volunteer firefighters, as well as water carriers, and local government equipment provide assistance. “The coordination of the fire forces is carried out by the chief of the fire service, Major General Stephanos Kolokouris,” the statement said.
