In China, they told how much it costs to treat patients with COVID-19 on average

Treatment of one patient with coronavirus in China is estimated at an average of about 21.5 thousand yuan (more than 3 thousand dollars), said the head of the Department of medical services management of the Chinese medical support administration, Xiong Xianjun.

According to him, the treatment of one seriously ill patient with COVID-19 costs more than 150 thousand yuan (more than 21,3 thousand dollars). In some cases, the cost of treating patients in critical condition reached several hundred thousand yuan, and sometimes the amount exceeded one million yuan.

Xiong Xianjun added that, as of April 6, a total of 1.48 billion yuan ($211 million) was spent on the examination and treatment of patients with confirmed coronavirus and suspected infection in all regions of China. At the same time, medical insurance will cover 66.6% of expenses (990 million yuan).

It is not specified who exactly will receive insurance compensation. According to the official, this amount includes medical bills for only 51,983 patients with a confirmed diagnosis who were treated in Chinese hospitals. The number of detected cases of coronavirus in the country has long exceeded 80 thousand.

Of the total amount, confirmed cases of CAVID-19 account for 1.11 billion yuan. Insurance will cover 746 million, or 66.7%. Patients with suspected coronavirus account for 368 million yuan, and insurance will cover 245 million yuan or 66.6%.

These are not final calculations since not all the accounts of the cured patients have been calculated yet. In addition, many more people are being treated, and many of them are seriously ill.
