The driver of a car deliberately hit a Muslim family in the city of London in the Canadian province of Ontario, four people were killed, local police said.
According to police, on Sunday evening, a car hit a family of five people, one died on the spot, three died in hospital. Only a nine-year-old child survived, suffering serious but not life-threatening injuries.
“We believe that this was a deliberate act, the attack on the victims was because they are Muslims,” said the head of the city police.
By the decree of the mayor, the city declared three days of mourning and lowered the flags. “There has been a mass murder directed against Muslims, against the people of London and caused by indescribable hatred,” the mayor said in a statement posted on Twitter.
He said that he met with representatives of the Muslim community to express their condolences and assure them that they can feel safe in the city.
Police arrested the suspect shortly after arriving at the scene, a 20-year-old man. He is in custody and the police are investigating.
