Spanish court orders jailing of John McAfee.
A Spanish court has ordered the detention without bail of American and British programmer and businessman John McAfee. The National Judicial Board of the Kingdom reported.
“He appeared on October 4 before the duty judge,” the court said. They added that McAfee is “wanted by the United States for a tax crime.”
“The court decided to detain him without bail,” the Spanish judicial panel said. A source in the country’s police told that McAfee was detained at Barcelona airport on October 3.
On Monday, the Federal Prosecutor’s office for the Western District of the US state of Tennessee issued a statement saying that the US authorities had charged McAfee with tax evasion. According to the document, the US authorities prepared an indictment in June 2020, but it has only been published now. The businessman founded McAfee in 1987, which is a major developer of antivirus software. In 2011, the company was acquired by Intel Corporation.
The Prosecutor’s office stressed that McAfee received millions of dollars, particularly through operations with cryptocurrency, for conducting consultations and for paid speeches.
“In the period 2014-2018, McAfee did not submit tax returns, despite receiving significant funds from these sources,” the Prosecutor’s office said in a statement.
The entrepreneur, if found guilty, could face up to five years in prison for each count of tax evasion, as well as one year for each count of failing to submit tax returns. They may also be required to pay compensation. Its size has not yet been determined.
