Hubble photographed the Necklace Nebula

Hubble photographed the , which is located about 15 thousand light-years from Earth.

The nebula in the picture also has the name PN G054.2-03.4 and is located in the small faint constellation of Arrows. The object was discovered in 2005 as part of the IPHAS survey, a ground-based survey of planetary nebulae in the northern part of the galactic plane in the H-alpha line.

The Necklace Nebula is the result of a giant star bursting after it came too close to a sun-like companion star. The two stars that created the Necklace Nebula are in relatively close orbits relative to each other. The orbital period is 1.2 days, the distance between the stars is approximately 5 solar radii.

Under such conditions, the gaseous envelope of a huge star expands into space. The nebula is approximately two light-years in diameter.

The presented image is composite: it is compiled from several images transmitted to Earth from the Hubble. The nebula was photographed using Wide Field Camera 3, the most technologically advanced instrument of the space observatory.
