Hong Kong chief of staff keeps all money at home due to US sanctions

Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam, who this year was among 11 high-ranking Chinese officials on the US sanctions list, said she was unable to use Bank accounts and had to keep all the money in cash at home.

“Here is the head of the administration of the Hong Kong special administrative region, who is not able to use banking services. I use cash for everything every day. I have piles of cash at home; the government pays my salary in cash because I don’t have a Bank account,” Lam said in an interview with HKIBC.

At the same time, she said that it is an honor to be so unreasonably sanctioned by the US government in such circumstances.

According to media reports, Lam’s annual salary is 5.21 million Hong Kong dollars (about 670 thousand US dollars).
