Dozens of Hollywood stars and other world celebrities have signed an open letter to US President Joe Biden asking him to postpone the signing of environmental agreements with Brazilian leader Jair Bolsonaro until there is a real decline in the deforestation of the equatorial Amazon forests.
Artists and musicians from the United States and Brazil also urged Biden not to allocate funds for issues related to these agreements. They noted the need for dialogue with indigenous peoples, traditional communities in the Amazon Basin and civil society to address this issue.
Among those who signed the appeal to the President of the United States is the actor Leonardo DiCaprio and his colleagues Alec Baldwin, Joaquin Phoenix, Orlando Bloom, Jane Fonda and Sigourney Weaver. Singer Katy Perry and musician Roger Watters also expressed their support for this initiative.
Earlier, more than 150 activists, actors and business people, including Leonardo DiCaprio and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, also signed an open letter to President Biden urging him to respond to climate change. The authors of the appeal noted that the American leader could be remembered as the “climate president” who took humanity “off the edge of the cliff.”
