The events in Afghanistan have shown that European countries cannot independently engage in defense and fully rely on the United States in this area. This is written by the publication Süddeutsche Zeitung.
According to journalist Daniel Bressler, this was clearly demonstrated during the evacuation of people from the Kabul airport.
“None of the NATO members would have taken a single step without the instructions of the United States. It became clear that the wishes of Germany, France, and Great Britain are of secondary importance in the framework of the withdrawal of troops,” the author wrote.
He emphasizes that even during the election campaign in 2017, German Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel called on European leaders to take greater responsibility in ensuring the security of their countries.
“However, despite the increase in the military budgets of Germany and other countries, nothing has changed in the balance of forces within NATO,” Bressler said.
The evacuation of foreign citizens and Afghans working for foreign missions is carried out through the only airport in Kabul held by the U.S. military and soldiers of other NATO countries.
