As it became known to the AFP agency from sources in the French judicial system, the actor Gerard Depardieu was officially charged with rape and sexual harassment. The charge was filed on December 16, and the reason for it was the statement of the 22-year-old actress, who claims to have become a victim of Depardieu in the summer of 2018. The girl told the police that she was twice subjected to violence by the artist in his home in Paris.
According to the victim, the first incident occurred on August 7, 2018, and the second on August 13. The name of the actress was not disclosed, but a source close to the investigation claims that the girl and Depardieu knew quite well: he helped her start a film career. It is assumed that on those two evenings Depardieu invited the girl to rehearse the play. However, according to sources, “there was nothing professional about the star’s behavior.” Lawyer Elodie Tuayon-Ibon, representing the interests of the actress, expressed hope that the press will respect her client’s private life.
Depardieu’s lawyer Herve Tamim managed to declare that his client categorically denies any accusations against him. Tamim has already made such comments several times since the first time it became known about the actor’s suspicions back in 2018. An initial investigation into the actress’s statements was carried out by the prosecutor’s office in 2019, but it was soon closed due to lack of evidence. The girl again turned to law enforcement agencies, and in the summer of 2020, the investigation was resumed. In October, at the request of the prosecutor’s office, the court decided to reopen the rape case. It is not yet known what kind of evidence obtained during the investigation was the reason for the indictment of Depardieu.
Gerard Depardieu is known for his provocative behaviour and enjoys a reputation as a bon vivant. In 2012, he was charged with assault and battery after hitting another car owner in the face during a conflict on a Parisian street. A year later, he was caught drunk driving when he fell off a scooter in Paris. The artist did not appear at the hearing of this case and was deprived of his rights for the next six months. In 2020, he was again stopped driving a scooter while drunk. Also, in 2011, Depardieu had to apologize after he peed in a plastic bottle in front of other passengers on the Paris-Dublin flight, and in 2014 he was accused of pouring water on passers-by from the window of his Italian apartment.
Depardieu began his acting career at the age of 18 with an independent theatre troupe. The first fame was brought to him by his role in Bertrand Blier’s provocative drama “Waltzing”. Soon he was already starring in the films of such great directors. He was twice awarded the Cesar Prize, became the winner of the Golden Globe and acting prizes at the Cannes and Venice festivals, and was also nominated for an Oscar.
