Gazprom has started design and survey work on the Power of Siberia-2 transit pipeline to China, said Alexey Miller, Chairman of the company’s management Board.
“On behalf of the President of Russia, Gazprom has started design and survey work on the Power of Siberia-2 gas pipeline. The goal of the project is to connect the gas transport infrastructure of the West and East of Russia, gasification in Eastern Siberia,” he said. According to Mr. Miller, the gas pipeline can become the basis of a new export channel through Mongolia to China. At the same time, Yamal gas will be supplied to both Europe and Asia.
Recall that in March, Gazprom decided to lay the transit pipeline Power of Siberia-2 to China via Mongolia. Russian President Vladimir Putin allowed the head of Gazprom Alexey Miller to transfer this option of laying the route to the pre-investment stage. The capacity of the pipe may increase to 50 billion cubic meters of gas per year from the previously estimated 30 billion cubic meters. In recent years, the main option was considered to be technically more complex and expensive, with the pipe lying directly from Russia to Western China via the Altai.
Gazprom and China’s CNPC signed an agreement on the main terms of gas pipeline deliveries via the Western route in 2015. Since then, Gazprom has focused on a shorter, but the technically complex route of gas supplies to China via the Altai. It allowed the quickest possible way to connect Gazprom’s fields in Western Siberia with China without the participation of third countries, but it ran through a problematic mountain range. In December 2019, pipeline deliveries of Russian gas to China via the Eastern route, the Power of Siberia gas pipeline, began.
