Gateway near-moon station will receive a weather station and a radiation detector. This conclusion was reached by NASA experts during the selection of the first scientific instruments for the future station.
The radiation detector, which will appear on Gateway, is being developed by the European Space Agency (ESA). With it, scientists will be able to evaluate the effect of various types of radiation on the health of the station crew. In addition, the moon, which will be studied by the station, has a magnetic field several hundred thousand times weaker than the earth, so the radiation there will be much more powerful than on Earth.
The second instrument, the space weather station, is being developed by NASA experts. It can be used to analyze space weather and the solar wind, whose particles move from the sun.
In the future, NASA experts will choose other scientific tools for Gateway.
