France Football on its website announced its decision not to award the Golden Ball at the end of 2020. Without the owner, there will also be other prizes, including awards to the best goalkeeper, best young player, and best soccer player.
The main reasons for this step are that, according to the founders of the award, because of the coronavirus pandemic, this year cannot be assessed as the previous ones, since the season was not renewed in all countries. Thus, when choosing a winner, objectivity will be missed.
The problem also lies in the journalists who were to determine the winner of the prize. Some of them may focus on personal issues in the face of a pandemic, rather than choosing the best footballer of the year.
This is the first year without the Golden Ball since 1956.
