Foreign Ministry: Turkey suspended military operation in Syria

The military operation “Source of peace,” which the Turkish military is conducting in Syria, has been suspended. However, it can be resumed at any time, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said.

“The operation in Syria is suspended, but not over. The army is ready to repel terrorists if necessary,” Cavusoglu said.

Turkey launched a ground military operation in Northern Syria on October 9. The campaign is directed against the Kurds who control the region. During talks with the US, the Turkish authorities on October 17 confirmed their agreement to a ceasefire for five days. The respite was needed for Kurdish troops to leave the border areas. After that, Ankara intends to provide its security zone in the abandoned areas.

The heads of Russia and Turkey met in Sochi on the eve of the day of summit talks. Putin and Erdogan spoke for more than six hours. They touched upon Syria-related issues. As a result, the leaders of the two countries signed a Memorandum, which was read by the Foreign Ministers of Russia Sergey Lavrov and Turkey Mevlut Cavusoglu. In particular, the parties came to an agreement in principle on the establishment of a security zone in Northern Syria.
