Facebook will hold a paid premiere film screening

Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, many film festivals have moved to online or hybrid formats. Another film will premiere later this month as part of a paid online event. This time it will be possible to watch it on the social network Facebook.

Users in any country where there are more than 100 paid online Facebook events available will be able to watch the premiere of The Outsider documentary about the 9/11 National Memorial and Museum in New York. The virtual ticket costs $ 4, and the film will premiere on August 19 at 8 pm ET (3 am ET on August 20). It will be available within 12 hours.

After the premiere of The Outsider, a panel discussion will take place on Facebook Live. The movie will hit theaters and other streaming platforms in September.

Facebook will be running several promotions for the event, which is organized by distributor Abramorama, but will not take a share of the ticket sales. The company waives commissions on creators’ earnings until 2022.

The film has already sparked controversy. Museum officials asked the filmmakers to cut 18 “libelous” scenes, but directors Pamela Yoder and Steven Rosenbaum said they would not back down. Michael Shulan, the former creative director of the museum and one of the central figures in the film, claims in the film that the museum is a “disneification” of the September 11, 2001 attacks.

It is not yet clear if other directors and distributors will be presenting their films via Facebook. But with the company trying to bite off a growing number of pies, it’s not hard to imagine Facebook would be interested in hosting similar events in the future.
