EURO 2020 NEWS

Introduction

Covid-19 has wreaked havoc on entire nations, the internal fabric of the global human population, resulting in the loss of many peoples livelihoods and ultimately the loss of many peoples lives. It has also meant that sports tournaments the world over has had to take a backseat as governments try to cope with this pandemic and its many variants and trying to regain control of their respective economies, and citizens in their respective countries.

One such tournament that was postponed was the 2020 UEFA European Football Championship, commonly referred to as UEFA Euro 2020 or simply Euro 2020. This tournament is only second in importance value to the Soccer World Cup, and as the World Cup, is also only played every four years. It brings together the Worlds top 24 national teams across Europe. The teams that have qualified for this tournament for Euro 2020 as per their respective groups (to be played this year from 11th June to 11th July 2021) are as per below.

The Golden Boot Betting Guide

At the time of writing, England is the bookmakers’ favorite to lift the trophy at Wembley Stadium on the 11th July. However, France, Belgium, Germany Spain, and Portugal round out the top six of single-figure teams on the boards.

Each team has several elite players, but the teams that combine as a collective from game to game will be the team that progresses to the knockout stages. These teams will then allow the main striker of that team to gain a significant advantage in the race to the winner of the tournament’s Golden Boot.

The nations that are expected to progress to the semi-finals or even the finals,  will have a premium striker in the team that will play in the majority of the games leading to the last four stages, or the final. This will enable their striker to either score or create the majority of the teams’ goals, and therefore put himself into prime position to win the Golden Boot.

The Contenders – Harry Kane of England (5/1 with Skybet)

Harry Kane is a phenomenon. He plies his trade for Tottenham Hotspur in the English Premier League and has been the catalyst for their top four placings in the Premier League in recent seasons, as well as their successful advance to the latter stages of the Champions League.

A hardworking, one-touch finish magician that can create goals from half chances, defenders, and their defensive units are going to have to concentrate for the full ninety-plus minutes of matches where England are the opponents if they want to stop him from scoring. He is currently at 5/1 on the Skybet betting boards to win the coveted award.

The Contenders – Romelu Lukaku of Belgium (8/1 with Skybet)

Romelu Lukaku is simply a beast who scores goals for fun. He had plied his trade in the Premier League for Chelsea, Manchester United, and Everton, so if his nation reaches the latter stages of the competition, residing in London and playing at Wembley stadium will not be foreign to him.

He has been in scintillating form for Inter Milan this season, leading his club side to their first Serie A title in the last eleven seasons. With the silky skills of Kevin De Bruyne being the architect of the supply line for his goal scoring prowess, expect Lukaku to be amongst the leading contenders for the Golden Boot at EURO 2020. Skybet currently has him at a very generous 8/1 and second favorite on the betting boards.

The Contenders – Cristiano Ronaldo of Portugal (9/1 with Skybet)

Portugal will have the services of Cristiano Ronaldo to spearhead their attack on the trophy. A phenomenal penalty and set-piece maestro, surprisingly his set-piece record on the world stage does not match that of his club sides. It is a mystery and one that Ronaldo, at the age of thirty-six would want to rectify.

His main supply line will be Bruno Fernandes, who plays for Manchester United in the Premier League. Whilst Fernandes is very good from his midfield position, he has also been described as a mercurial player, brilliant and unpredictable in equal parts which makes him sometimes not dictate the play as one would expect especially in the important phases of a match.

If however, the two of them combine at their brilliant best, we would see Portugal surprise their illustrious opponents in the group of death (Group F) in the fight to qualify for the knockout stages of the competition.

The Contenders – Kylian Mbappe of France (9/1 with Skybet)

Despite Mbappe not been handed the responsibility for penalties or set pieces (this might change depending on Didier Dechamps’ decision-making process at the start or during the tournament) this young man, at the tender age of twenty-two. The PSG frontman has all the attributes to score goals, and his blistering pace will have many defenders trailing in his wake.

Despite his young age, Mbappe has represented his country on 39 occasions, scoring sixteen goals in those matches. His pace and his athleticism will allow him to create goal scoring opportunities that other players will not be able to.

Summary

Only four players have been profiled in this article as a possible winner of the Golden Boot for EURO 2020. However, there are many more possibilities, strikers of other nations, midfielders who could fulfill the role of an auxiliary striker for their team, or strikers who are now out of favor but could be selected for the matchday team ahead of the incumbent.

The four that have been highlighted are the current strikers for their national teams. They have the extra attribute that could propel them to score more goals than any other player at EURO 2020 and ultimately, with the assistance of their teammates, win them the Golden Boot.
