Estonian Defense Forces conducted drills with informant combat robots

The Estonian Defense Forces conducted an exercise during which two Milrem Robotics THeMIS combat robots provided the troops with situational awareness, fire support and casualty evacuation.

In an exercise in April 2021, ground forces performed a maneuver to counter a simulated attack by armored vehicles. Since the main forces remained in defensive positions 1 km from the enemy forces, the combat UGV THeMIS, integrated with the deFNder Light remote weapon system of FN Herstal, moved to the forward point 430 m ahead.

The mission of the THeMIS Combat Support robot was to transport the ammunition of the anti-tank unit and provide fire support from a 7.62 mm machine gun for anti-tank groups and observer groups as they advanced. Meanwhile, the THeMIS Observe UGV deployed a tethered Acecore drone behind the main force for situational awareness and target intelligence for artillery.

After the main target was destroyed, THeMIS Combat acted as a field ambulance to evacuate the simulated casualties to the rear. The robots were controlled by troops via a handheld interface and an augmented reality headset.
