Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan signed a decree on turning the Hagia Sophia into a mosque, this will allow for prayers to be held in it. A photograph of the decree was posted on Twitter by the Turkish leader on Friday, July 10th.
“It was decided: to transfer the administration of Hagia Sophia to Diyanet (Turkish Religious Affairs Authority – Ed.) And open it for worship,” the decree says.
Earlier on Friday, the Turkish State Council overturned a 1934 decision to turn Hagia Sophia into a museum. Thus, St. Sophia Cathedral in Istanbul will again become a mosque.
US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and the Russian Orthodox Church opposed changing the status of attractions. Also, UNESCO called on the Turkish side not to make this decision.
