Turkey will open the borders to Syrian refugees if the European Union calls the operation “Source of peace” the invasion, conducted by Ankara in the North and Northeast of the country. Turkish leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced during a speech.
“We will open our border crossings and release 3.6 million refugees to you,” Erdogan said, criticizing the European Union for condemning the cross — border operation. The Turkish President also called “absurd” the position of Egypt, on the eve of declaring the illegality of any operation of Ankara in Syria.
On September 5, the Turkish leader already said that Ankara will open border crossings if the European Union does not support Turkey’s intentions to create a security zone, a Haber TV channel reported.
The Turkish leader announced the start of operation “Source of peace” in the North and Northeast of Syria on the afternoon of October 9. According to Erdogan, it is directed against organizations that Ankara consider terrorist-the Kurdistan Workers’ party and the Kurdish “People’s self-defense units”, as well as the “Islamic state”. Turkey justifies the legality of the operation by the agreement signed between Ankara and Damascus in 1998.
