Drones transported organs for transplant for the first time

Researchers in the United States conducted test flights and transported the cornea and kidney for transplant. The device covered 16.5 km. the organs were not damaged.

Test flights of drones in Nevada have shown that the devices can safely transport organs for transplant. Transportation logistics company MissionGo has partnered with the Nevada Donor Network to test the transportation of cornea and kidneys across the desert up to 50 km. MissionGo noted that delivery by means of unmanned aerial vehicles could speed up donation and reduce its carbon footprint.

The company noted that they now need to obtain permission from the authorities for transportation. However, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has already authorized Amazon to begin shipping with Prime drones, while Walmart is experimenting with delivering groceries and drugs.

The drones have made two flights so far, but researchers have now shown that the drones can be used to transport organs for donation. During one of the flights, the drone was able to transfer the cornea in a special container for donation – on average, it covered 3 km in 5 minutes.

The second flight broke the record for the longest flight with organs delivered by an unmanned aerial vehicle. The device was able to quickly transport the kidney from the airport, covering 16.5 km in 25 minutes.

These test flights were also an experiment in the field of contactless delivery – in this case, organs are transferred by fewer people, which reduces the risk of organ damage. The researchers analyzed the cornea and kidneys after the flight and found that transportation had no effect on them.
