Cummings headed a Committee of the House of Representatives, whose investigation irritated the President.
Congressman Elijah Cummings died Thursday night at Johns Hopkins hospital as a result of complications of long-standing health problems at the age of 68.
The representatives of his office reported this.
A legislator from Maryland, Cummings has vigorously championed the interests of the poor in his district, which occupies a large portion of Baltimore.
As Chairman of the House Committee on reform and oversight, Cummings led numerous investigations into President Donald Trump’s government activities.
The investigations angered the President, who earlier this year called the Congressman’s district a “rodent-infested mess” in which “no one would want to live.”
Cummings responded that government officials should stop making “hateful, inflammatory” statements that only serve to divide society and distract the country from real problems.
In 2003-2004, Cummings headed the Association of black legislators in the Congress.
