House and Senate leaders on Monday condemned President Donald Trump’s decision to withdraw troops from northeastern Syria. According to critics, this step will increase the risk of a Turkish strike on Kurdish forces in the region.
“This decision poses a serious threat to regional security and stability and sends a dangerous signal to Iran and Russia, as well as to our allies, showing that the United States is no longer a reliable partner,” said the speaker of the House of Representatives, Democrat Nancy Pelosi. She called on Trump to “reverse this dangerous decision.”
The leader of the Republican majority in the Senate, Mitch McConnell, in turn, said: “The hasty withdrawal of US troops from Syria will only play into the hands of Russia, Iran, and the Assad regime. And this will increase the risk that is and other terrorist organizations will be able to regroup.”
