The former US president called the riots an “unprecedented attack” on US political institutions.
Former US President Bill Clinton (1993-2001) suggested that the storming of the Capitol in Washington by supporters of the former head of the US administration, Donald Trump, who lost the presidential election, was a reflection of the radical division of public opinion in the United States. He expressed this opinion in an interview published on Tuesday with the BBC Broadcasting Corporation.
“They [Trump supporters] were encouraged to come there. They did this because the people they used to listen to said that everything (the US presidential election in November 2020) was falsified. I was horrified by this, it [the storming of the Capitol on January 6] was a logical stage in the split of public opinion in the United States, ” said Clinton, who himself became president as a member of the Democratic Party of the United States. In January, he had already spoken out on this topic, claiming that Trump and his supporters were heating the situation “to cancel the results of the election that he lost.” Clinton called the riots an “unprecedented attack” on U.S. political institutions. During the assault, five people were killed, including one police officer.
The interview with the former US president was dedicated to the launch of sales of his book “The President’s Daughter,” co-authored with the famous American writer James Patterson. The work tells the story of the kidnapping of Melanie-the daughter of the fictional US President Matthew Keating. Clinton said that this topic is personal for him, as he, as president, was worried about the life and health of his family members because of the likely threat from the leader of the banned terrorist organization “Al-Qaeda” Osama bin Laden. At the same time, Patterson stressed that neither Clinton’s real daughter, whose name is Chelsea, nor Donald Trump’s daughter Ivanka, nor George W. Bush’s daughters Barbara nor Jenna are not the prototype of Melanie in the book. “The President’s Daughter” is the second work written by Bill Clinton and James Patterson. Previously, they were the authors of the book “The President is Missing,” which has sold more than 3 million copies.
