China threatened the US with tough measures in response to Trump’s words about raising duties

The Chinese authorities intend to firmly defend their interests in the event of increased pressure from the United States and the strengthening of American protectionist barriers. This was stated on Tuesday by Chinese foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang, commenting on the statement of the US President Donald Trump about the possible increase in duties on Chinese goods from January 1, 2019.

“China is interested in such tensions being settled through negotiations on an equal basis. At the same time, we are able to firmly defend our legal rights, ” he said, speaking at a regular briefing. “We hope that the American side will work with us in a common key <...> to promote fruitful pragmatic cooperation in all directions for the sake of our States and peoples.”

According to the diplomat, trade and economic relations between Beijing and Washington are based on mutual trust and should meet the interests of both sides. He recalled that recently the leaders of the two countries “agreed to promote a dialogue that would be carried out taking into account the position of both China and the United States.”

Earlier, the US President Donald Trump said that it is unlikely to satisfy Beijing’s proposal to refrain from the planned January 1 increase in duties of 10-25% on imports of Chinese goods. At the same time, he did not rule out that the United States and China would conclude an agreement on the settlement of bilateral trade disputes at the forthcoming G20 summit in Argentina.
