The Chinese government has imposed restrictions on American diplomats working in China. These restrictions are equivalent to what the Donald Trump administration has imposed on Chinese diplomats in the US, according to Chinese international news channel CGTN.
Since October, Chinese diplomats in the United States have been required to notify the State Department before meeting with US state and municipal officials. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said at a press conference in Beijing today that China has notified the US Embassy of the introduction of equivalent countermeasures. Now American diplomats in China will be required to notify the Chinese foreign Ministry before meeting with local officials.
“China has always supported foreign diplomatic and consular personnel, including those from the United States, to carry out normal official activities in China in accordance with the law,” Hua Chunying said. “We call on the United States to immediately lift restrictions on Chinese diplomats in the United States.”
