California Governor sued for helping illegal immigrants

Gavin Newsom decided to allocate $75 million to help immigrants who can’t get unemployment benefits.

A conservative nonprofit organization, the Center for American freedom, sued California Governor Gavin Newsom to prevent him from allocating $ 75 million in financial aid to illegal immigrants who are unable to receive unemployment benefits amid the crisis due to the coronavirus.

The organization asked the state Supreme Court to impose an injunction on the Governor’s initiative, emphasizing that California and Federal laws prohibit the issuance of unemployment benefits to those who are in the country illegally.

“This is taxpayers’ money, which can only be distributed by the legislature. This is not a stash that the Governor can dispose of at his discretion,” said the head of the organization, San Francisco lawyer Harmeet K. Dhillon.

Representatives of Newsom do not comment yet.
