US Secretary of State Michael Pompeo also noted that “cooperation between Bulgaria and the US will have a powerful effect in other areas as well.”
Bulgaria and the United States signed key documents on Friday on the security of a new generation of 5G mobile communications and the use of nuclear energy for civil purposes. According to the government press service, the event was attended by Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borissov and, via videoconference, US Secretary of State Michael Pompeo.
“The signing of the declarations guarantees the overall security of the Euro – Atlantic family,” Pompeo said, adding that “cooperation between Bulgaria and the United States will have a powerful effect in other areas as well.”
“Today, we signed a Declaration on 5G networks and a Memorandum on the use of nuclear energy for civil purposes. These are extremely important areas,” the Bulgarian Prime Minister said.
The US, under Secretary of State for economic growth and energy security Keith Krach, who visited Sofia in connection with the signing of the documents, noted that relations between the countries continue to expand. “We are expanding our cooperation in the field of military affairs, defense, and energy. All these topics that we work together on are important for each of the parties; they show the deep relations between our countries and our strategic partnership. Bulgaria is a strategic partner of the United States,” Krach said.
The Memorandum on the security of the new generation of 5G mobile communications supports the rejection of the use of Chinese technologies. The Memorandum on the use of nuclear energy for civil purposes provides for the implementation of Bulgaria’s plans to expand its nuclear program using the latest generation of safe technologies with the United States’ participation.
