The new cruiser R 18 is made in the style of the classic pre-war BMW R 5.
After a series of conceptual motorcycles, the German brand has finally introduced a serial cruiser that combines classic design with modern technology. In particular, the design of the front and rear suspension, as well as the cardan drive, are stylized as BMW R 5 of the 1936 model.
The motorcycle received a steel tubular frame, the front suspension – an inverted telescopic fork, and the role of the rear is performed by a mono-shock under the saddle. The cruiser is equipped with a combined brake system with two discs on the front wheel (pressing the front brake lever also applies the rear brake, and the rear brake pedal is responsible only for it), ABS anti-lock system, ASC stabilization system and anti-slip system MSR. The driver will also have the opportunity to choose one of three – Rain, Roll and Rock – engine operating modes.
The engine itself is called Big Boxer and is the most powerful 2-cylinder boxer engine that has ever been used on BMW motorcycles. The 1.8-liter unit produces 91 hp. and combined with a 6-speed gearbox.
At the start of sales, many accessories from the BMW Motorrad brand catalog will immediately be available for BMW R 18, and in addition, customers will be offered a lot of aftermarket parts from well-known companies such as Roland Sands Design, Vance & Hance and Mustang Seats.
The cost of a new cruiser in Germany will start at € 22,800 for the BMW R 18 First Edition with expanded chrome trim and strip stripes on the tank.
