Bloomberg: the US is preparing sanctions against Turkey because of the S-400

The team of US President Donald Trump has decided on a package of sanctions to be adopted against Turkey for what it began to receive under the contract with Russia components for anti-aircraft missile systems S-400. This Bloomberg told a few familiar with the situation sources.

The sanctions against Ankara, according to the Agency’s interlocutors, will be announced in the coming days. The American authorities, according to them, chose from three possible options of measures, which had different degrees of influence. What kind of package of restrictions eventually decided to take in the US administration, the sources did not specify, however, noting that all the sanctions were developed within the framework of the CAATSA law (“On countering America’s enemies through sanctions”). The document provides for restrictions on contracting countries that purchase military equipment from companies that are already on the US blacklist.

As a result, the sanctions plan against Turkey, Bloomberg points out, Trump will have to approve.

According to one of the Agency’s sources, Washington will announce restrictions against Ankara at the end of next week. Pause in this matter (supply of components S-400 began on July 12), the Agency interlocutor explained that the US wants to wait out the anniversary of the coup attempt in Turkey in 2016 (it will be celebrated on the night of the 15 to 16 July). Thus, the US authorities, according to the source, hope to prevent further speculation that the incident in 2016, according to supporters of the Turkish leader Recep Erdogan, was the United States.

The representative of the state Department declined to comment on possible US sanctions against Turkey.
