Blinken: Women’s empowerment is critical to shared prosperity

The Secretary of State made a statement on the occasion of International Women’s Day.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken stated on the occasion of International Women’s Day noting that this holiday is dedicated to ” honoring the leadership qualities, strength, and courage of women and girls.”

“The United States recognizes that the equal participation of women in social, political, and economic life is critical to the peace and prosperity of our collective community,” the head of American diplomacy said.

“The COVID-19 pandemic last year was an unexpected challenge to the security and prosperity of women and girls,” the Secretary of State recalled. – Women and girls have been disproportionately affected by the pandemic, ranging from increased domestic violence risk during quarantine to increased economic insecurity and job insecurity. Despite this disparity, women have been at the forefront of this pandemic, including unpaid carers, health workers, teachers, and other critical personnel. They have continued to stand up for the dignity and rights of all people, making sustainable changes that will benefit their communities for years to come.”

“It is with great pleasure that I celebrate International Women’s Day this year by hosting the 15th annual International Women’s Courage Award (IWOC) ceremony. This year’s award winners demonstrate that brave women inspire the world to change for the better. These women have demonstrated exceptional courage and leadership in fighting for peace, justice; human rights, gender equality, and women’s empowerment, often at great personal risk and sacrifice. We know that when women are empowered, they bring positive change. I am proud to celebrate the most important achievements of each of the IWOC Award winners this year, and I am very pleased that the First Lady will join us on this occasion,” the Foreign Minister said.

“The United States is committed to making gender equality and women’s empowerment central to our foreign and national security policies. Today, as every day, we are firmly committed to women’s empowerment and gender equality at home and worldwide. The United States stands ready to support and promote the rights of all women and girls in the areas of health, economy, politics, and human rights because when women are empowered, it benefits us all,”

said Antony Blinken.
