Biden to appoint a special envoy to promote LGBT rights

President Joe Biden will appoint Jessica Stern as the US Special Envoy for the promotion of LGBT human rights. This is reported by CNN with reference to the official representative of the White House.

Stern is currently the executive director of OutRight Action International, an organization dedicated to ensuring LGBT rights both at home and abroad.

She is the second person to be named for this role – her predecessor, Randy Berry, then held the new position from its creation in 2015 until 2017, after which the position was vacant.

“The Special Envoy will play a vital role in the implementation of the Presidential Memorandum on the promotion of LGBT rights,” the Presidential Administration stressed. Officials note that the human rights of the LGBT community are being increasingly threatened in different countries of the world and the task of the new special envoy will include both fixing violations and directly promoting LGBT rights.
