The New York-based company has developed a device that looks like a wireless headset – researchers suggest it reduces stress levels within a month of starting use. This is due to “affective touch”.
Researchers from Feelmore Labs presented the Cove device – it attaches to the ears and periodically massages the temporal part of the head using vibrations. Scientists note that if you wear it for 20 minutes a day, the user becomes more resistant to stress, relaxes more easily, and falls asleep.
Cove uses vibrations and massages the area of the head behind the user’s ears – the researchers who developed this device call these movements a semblance of affective touch. Initially, the scientists planned to use micro-charges of electricity, which are also considered to be an effective method to combat stress, but later decided to focus on vibrations. In preliminary tests, users reported a decrease in stress levels over the course of a month.
The hardware is paired with an iOS and Android app that can be used to track the user’s progress. In addition, it can develop a “stress meter” that determines at what point the device should work. However, the process will not interfere with work, jogging, or other daily activities.
Earlier, scientists presented a new sensor that can be sewn into clothes – the device monitors all indicators of the body through sweat. The data is refreshed every 5-30 seconds. It can be used to diagnose and monitor acute and chronic illnesses or monitor health conditions during sports. The device, described in NPJ Flexible Electronics, consists of special sensitive filaments and electronic components. It is able to transfer data, as well as collect, store, and process them in real-time.
