For many years, Apple smartphones have been protected from water and dust. For example, the iPhone 7 and up boasts an IP67 rating, which allows short-term immersion in water to a depth of 1 meter. The iPhone 11 and newer lineup is already rated IP68, which offers even better protection. For example, the official website says that the iPhone 12 can withstand diving to a depth of 6 meters.
Apple is actively promoting the waterproofing of its smartphones and focuses on the ability to resist liquid penetration. That is, as it is assumed, you can at least not be afraid of accidental falling into the water, but as a maximum – take pictures underwater.
But in fact, everything is far from being so cloudless. In small print, Apple warns that smartphones that have been in the water will lose their warranty. That is, if the gadget breaks down as a result of falling into water, you will have to repair it at your own expense.
This is precisely what a group of users in the United States is outraged at, who filed a lawsuit. According to them, all certificates were obtained in static tests in clean water in a laboratory, which is different from water in pools or the sea. Therefore, they demand that Apple stop being misleading with its advertising and refund the cost of the repair.
By the way, last year the Italian Antimonopoly Service fined Apple for advertising water protection and forced the company to pay 10 million euros.
In a recent lawsuit, users cite this case and emphasize that it should “make the company understand that there is a problem that needs to be addressed.”
